Hungerford City Information: Hungerford is a market town and civil parish in Berkshire, England. The name Hungerford is a Saxon name which means 'Hanging Wood Ford’. It is the westernmost town in Berkshire, situated on the border with Wiltshire, and lies within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Walbury Hill is the highest point in the entire South East England region that is situated only 4 miles from the town. The town is remembered for a particularly tragic aspect of the town’s history the Hungerford massacre on 19 August 1987 which resulted in the deaths of 17 people including the killer, Michael Ryan, a local loner. Hungerford is the only place in the country to have continuously celebrated Hocktide or Tutti Day, the second Tuesday after Easter.
